Shades are darker variations of a color created by mixing it with black. Tints are lighter variations created by mixing with white. Together, they form a comprehensive color scale that is essential for building design systems, UI themes, and consistent visual hierarchies.

In color theory, a tone is created by adding gray (both black and white) to a color. Our tool focuses on pure shades and tints, giving you the cleanest possible variations of your base color without muddying it with gray.

Our generator works by progressively adjusting the RGB values toward black (for shades) or toward white (for tints), creating evenly spaced steps across the spectrum. This produces smooth, predictable gradients that work beautifully in any design context.

Modern design systems like Tailwind CSS, Material Design, and Ant Design all rely heavily on shade and tint scales. A typical color scale has 10 steps (50 through 900), where lower numbers are tints and higher numbers are shades of the base color.

Common applications include: hover states (one step darker), active states (two steps darker), disabled states (lighter tint with reduced opacity), backgrounds (lightest tints), and borders (mid-range shades or tints).

By generating consistent shade and tint scales, you ensure visual harmony across your entire application. Every button, card, alert, and background color derives from the same base palette, creating a cohesive and professional look.

In traditional color theory, the terms shade, tint, and tone have precise meanings. A shade always involves adding black, reducing lightness while maintaining the hue. A tint always involves adding white, increasing lightness while maintaining the hue.

Our tool generates shades by multiplying each RGB channel by a decreasing factor (approaching 0). Tints are generated by interpolating each RGB channel toward 255 (white). This linear interpolation in RGB space produces visually uniform steps.

For more perceptually uniform results, some designers prefer working in the HSL or LAB color space. However, RGB-based shade and tint generation is the most widely used approach in web development and produces excellent results for CSS and digital design.

What is the difference between a shade and a tint?

A shade is created by adding black to a color (making it darker), while a tint is created by adding white to a color (making it lighter). Together they form a complete color scale from dark to light.

How many shades and tints can I generate?

You can generate between 1 and 20 shades and tints. The default is 10, which provides a good range of variations from your base color.
